Meet the Winners
Paw Wah is a member of Environmental Health Coalition’s City Heights Community Action Team, a group of volunteers who are committed to bettering the health of City Heights through built environment improvements. As a public transit user, Paw was aware of the safety hazards for her community, particularly for her Karen family and friends. Karen is a refugee group from Myanmar whose language is unique. Paw uses her bilingual abilities to serve as a bridge between Karen immigrants and the broader community. Paw assists with interpretation and translation for multiple organizations, including the Environmental Health Coalition, San Diego City Council, San Diego Association of Governments, and the City Heights Area Planning Committee. Through Paw’s voice, Karen residents are able to advocate for their needs and interact directly with their officials. In addition to her skills as a community builder, Paw is a skilled organizer, advocate, and leader. She is the co-founder of the Karen Organization of San Diego County, the former Vice-President of the San Diego Asian Youth Organization, and a member of the Hoover High School mentorship program Cardinal’s Interact.
