Meet the Winners
Guadalupe Reyes Calderon has been an advocate for undocumented folks, immigrants, and youth in Merced since she was a sophomore in high school. Recently, Guadalupe has dedicated her time to creating opportunities for young people and pushing for the City of Merced to invest in them by helping to create a youth culture of activism and organizing.
An immigrant herself, Guadalupe is familiar with the challenges faced by undocumented children in the United States. As an engaged community member, she is highly aware of the issues faced by youth in Merced, a community that continuously decides to invest in law enforcement rather than create opportunities for youth. She has been instrumental in the establishment of Girls & Womyn of Color (GWoC), a safe space for young women in the community. She has worked to raise visibility around sexual harassment and assault against young women in Merced, leading to the #MercedToo campaign and a concrete plan to respond to harassment on campus as well as a student representative seat on the Merced Union High School District board.
Guadalupe is a committed community leader who continuously raises up those around her. She is currently enrolled in college classes while she continues to work for a safer and more inclusive Merced.
